Chess Master is a web-based chess game that lets players enjoy chess in the
browser with support for playing against the computer (AI) or with another
player on the same device. The application includes separate dashboards for
administrators and players, user accounts, and tracking of games and basic
statistics. It is built with PHP for the backend, vanilla JavaScript for the
game logic and dashboard behaviour, and CSS for layout and responsiveness.

PLAY MODES

  • Play with AI – Play against the computer with selectable difficulty
    (Easy, Medium, Hard).
  • Two Players – Two people can play on the same device, taking turns
    as White and Black.

GAME FEATURES

  • Full chess rules – Standard piece movement, check, checkmate, stalemate,
    and basic move validation.
  • Move feedback – Highlights the selected piece and valid target squares.
  • Captured pieces – Shows pieces captured by White and Black during the game.
  • Undo move – Option to take back the last move (where supported).
  • New game – Start a new game at any time from the game screen.
  • Game status – On-screen text for current turn and game-over messages
    (e.g. checkmate, stalemate).

USER ACCOUNTS & ROLES

  • Sign up – New users can create an account (username, email, password).
  • Login / Logout – Secure session-based login and logout.
  • Player role – Access to the player dashboard, play games, and view
    personal game history.
  • Admin role – Access to the admin dashboard to manage players and view
    platform-wide data.

PLAYER DASHBOARD

  • Dashboard (overview) – Welcome area and “Start New Game” button, plus
    a list of recent games.
  • Play Game – Opens the in-dashboard chess game (mode selection and board).
  • Game History – Table of past games with details such as opponent type,
    difficulty, result, moves, duration, and date.
  • Responsive layout – Sidebar navigation and content adapt to small
    screens; hamburger menu on mobile/tablet.

ADMIN DASHBOARD

  • Overview – Summary stats (e.g. total players, active/inactive counts,
    total games, play time).
  • Active Players – List of active players with search and basic info.
  • Inactive Players – List of inactive players for review.
  • Recent Games – List of recent games across the platform.
  • Player management – Ability to activate or deactivate player accounts;
    inactive players are logged out and cannot log in until reactivated.

GAME TRACKING & STATISTICS

  • Game tracking – When a player plays from the dashboard, each game can
    be recorded (start, moves, end) via the backend.
  • Game history – Stored games can be shown in the player’s Game History
    tab and in the Recent Games section on the overview.
  • Database storage – Games, moves, and related data are stored in a
    database for persistence.

TECHNICAL & UX

  • Responsive design – Layout and controls adjust for desktop, tablet,
    and mobile; touch-friendly buttons and navigation.
  • Session security – Login and role checks on protected pages; inactive
    players are blocked from access after deactivation.
  • Clean UI – Themed styling with a dark layout, clear sections, and
    readable typography.
